About product components

Product components are used only for key generation. When generating a key, Poetic sends only the components to the key generator, not the entire product.

For example, publishers may have several products that use the same components. A publisher may sell both a C compiler and a C++ compiler. Both compilers may have the same IDE (Integrated Development Environment) component, along with separate components for the different types of compilers.

The components are assigned to the product from the Activation tab of the Product Maintenance page.

Note that when you edit a component, the changes are reflected in all of the products that use that component.

Adding or editing a component

To create or edit a component:

  1. On the Administration menu, click Products.
  2. On the Product Configuration menu, click Components.

The Filter Components page displays the current list of components.

To narrow the list of components to help locate the component you want, specify search criteria, then click Filter Components. See Conducting searches for more information about searches.

  3. To add a component, click Add a Component.

To edit a component, click the Edit link for the component.

    The Component Maintenance page displays.

Identifying the component

On the Component Maintenance page, in the Component Details section:

Pub ID In the Pub ID field, type the identifier used by the publisher to refer to the component.
Component name In the Component name field, type the name of the component.
Component description In the Component description field, type a description of the component and the reason it was created.

Providing technology, version, and annotation information for the component

In the Locking Technology Information section:

Technology structure From the Technology structure dropdown, select the type of locking technology used by the component.
Component version In the Component version field, type the version of the component.
Annotation Use the Annotation field to select the associated label/notes to display for keys generated from this component. To search for and select the annotation, use the find icon.

Providing custom codes for the component

The use of the Code fields depends on the key generation method. The Code fields are used to provide additional data required by the key generator.

For the key generators provided with or supported by Poetic, the Code fields are used as follows:

Code 1 For the STATC (static value) key generator, the value of the key to return for permanent activation.

For the SNPOL (serial number pool) key generator, the serial number pool from which to get the key for permanent activation.

For the LIST (list value) key generator, the list value code from NO_KEY_REQ_MESSAGE for which to return the description as the key for permanent activation.

For the REPRS (Reprise) key generator, the number of bits per character (4, 5, or 6).

For the SENTL (Safenet Sentinel) key generator, the feature name.

Code 2 For the STATC key generator, the value of the key to return for evaluation activation.

For the SNPOL key generator, the serial number pool from which to get the key for evaluation activation.

For the LIST key generator, the list value code from NO_KEY_REQ_MESSAGE for which to return the description as the key for evaluation activation.

For the REPRS (Reprise) key generator, the name of the key generator executable.

Code 3 For the SNPOL key generator, if the value of Code 3 is MULTI, then the key is returned as a list of serial numbers, one for each activated quantity.
Code 4 Not currently used by Poetic provided or supported key generators.
Code 5 For the SENTL key generator, the name of the codeopts file.

For the MANU (Manual) key generator, the number of keys to add for this component.

Code 6-10 Not currently used by Poetic provided or supported key generators.

Providing a template for the key

If the key generator for this component requires a template for the key, you use the Template section to set up the template.

The REPRS key generator uses the template for the feature lines. The SENTL key generator uses the template if provided.

Setting consumption recording requirements

The Consumption Recording section allows you to configure Poetic to track how the component is used. This is especially important if you use components provided by other vendors.

Consumption recording is required Check this box if you need to be able to track the usage of this component. This is most often used for third-party components from other vendors.

If this box is checked, then the component is included in the component consumption report.

Vendor To select the name of the vendor who provides this component, click the find icon. Leave this value blank if this component does not come from a third-party provider. You must provide a vendor if consumption recording is required.

The list of vendors is configured using the COMPONENT_VENDOR list.

Consumption type From the Consumption type dropdown, select whether the component is for licenses only, support only, or license with support included.

Viewing transactions

The Transactions tab lists details on changes that occurred to a component.
