Types of historical keys

Disabled keys

When a user returns or rehosts activated items, the associated keys are disabled. These keys may be incremental or non-incremental.

Replaced non-incremental keys

If keys are not incremental, then when users add on to an existing machine, Poetic generates a new key for the entire quantity on the machine, and disables the previous key.

For example, a user activates:

Displaying the Search Historical Keys form

The Keys tab only shows the active keys, not historical keys. If there are historical keys, and you are able to view them, then there is a View historical keys link:

Searching for historical keys

You can search for historical keys using the following criteria:

Generated in the last From the dropdown, select the range from the current date for which to include the historical keys. You can choose to only display keys that were generated in the last:
  • 30 days
  • 90 days
  • 180 days
  • 365 days
Product line From the dropdown, select the product line for the keys to include.
For keys From the dropdown, select the annotation for the keys to include.
Key contains Enter text included in the key. You can use the wildcard to provide partial criteria. For example, to include all keys that begin with KR32, you would type KR32%.

This field can only be used to search for plain text keys. It cannot be used to find binary keys or keys that are stored in external files.

After providing the criteria, to update the list to display the matching keys, click Search Keys.

Displaying the key value and details for a historical key

For each key in the results, the list initially includes:

A set of tabs displays below the row:

Key Contains the value of the key, if the key is not a binary key or an external file.
Activation Details Contains:
  • The locking IDs provided for that activation
  • Other activation information provided for the activation
  • The activation type. If the key is for both permanent and evaluation items, then the type is set to Permanent, Evaluation.
  • The target tag
  • The platform and deployment, if provided

Please note that the information will be the most recent information for the activation, not necessarily the information provided when this key was generated. So if any information was changed when the key was replaced, the more recent information is what is displayed here.
